Description

In this virtual experience, students will…

  • Analyze the geological processes that contributed to the formation of the Andes, by examining the unique features of the mountain range and its different regions.
  • Evaluate the cultural significance of the Andes in South American history, by researching and comparing the ways in which different societies have utilized and perceived these mountains.
  • Investigate the environmental impact of human activity on the Andes, by exploring the effects of deforestation, mining, and other forms of development on the ecosystem and local communities.

Lesson overview

The Andes are a long chain of mountains on the western side of South America, stretching over 4,300 miles from north to south. They run along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and go through seven different countries: Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina. Did you know that the famous Amazon River actually starts in the Andes mountains?
